Field work in Vietnam in 2014
In March 2014, as part of the project entitled “Development of the Glass Industry in Central Vietnam”, a working trip to Vietnam by specialists from our company took place. Three principal activities were carried our in connection with the implementation of the project – a workshop for the Vietnamese partners, the collecting of data for the expert studies to be processed within the framework of the project and also of technological samples of raw materials.
The workshop was conducted in the premises of the Faculty of Geography and Geology at the Hue University of Sciences. In addition to the personnel of the Northern Central Geological Division of General Department of Geology and Minerals of Vietnam from Vinh City the participants also comprised teachers and students from this university. The workshop was focused both on the procedure of mining projects (from the project of development, to the actual extraction and the completion of the reclamation and remediation of the land affected by the mining) and on the environmental impact assessment (EIA) of the mining and processing of the raw materials. Within the context of the EIA critical attention was paid to the practical requirements in regard to the assessment of the environmental impact of the project, including the options available for the prevention and the minimisation of adverse effects and/or for compensating for them. The workshop was conducted in English together with simultaneous translation into Vietnamese that was provided by our company. As part of the workshop a fieldtrip was also organised to sites of deposits of the glass raw materials (the glass sand in Phong Dien and the limestone in Phong Xuan), during which the practical aspects of the topics under discussion were demonstrated.
In addition, as part of the working trip, the collecting of field data was carried out for creating model plans for development and for the implementation of extraction, reclamation and remediation projects and model EIA studies in regard to the locations of the deposits of the three raw materials of interest: Phong Xuan (dolomitic limestone for glass production), Thuong Quang (limestone) and Bot Do (feldspar raw material). These works were carried out in close collaboration with the staff of both of the partner organisations. Field reconnaissance was conducted, including of the surrounding settlements and the access roads. A biological survey was implemented, together with collecting archival and current data related to a varied range of fields (hydrological, meteorological, climatological and hydrogeological data; data regarding traffic intensity, population, economic activity and the utilisation of local natural resources, etc.). All the data recorded will be utilised in regard to ongoing activities planned, in accordance with the project schedule, for the year 2014.
In accordance with the requirements of the project and based on the analyses of the geological rock samples from the year 2013 that had also been collected then, representative technological samples of the raw materials of interest were taken at these locations. These samples were transported to the Czech Republic, where they will be subjected to technological research with the aim of optimising the composition of the glass batch made from the local raw materials of Thua Thien Hue province.
