Belize - evaluation of hydrological groundwater resources
The G E T Ltd. Company participated in the first half of 2014 as a subcontractor of GEOMEDIA Ltd. In the field phase of the UNDP project "Assessment of Groundwater Resources in the Southern Coastal Water Province of Belize Referred it as Savannah Groundwater Province" in Belize.
The project is implemented under Belize government project "Enhancing Belize's resiliance's ADAPT to the Effects of Climate Change-00083646.
Discussions on climate change in recent years emphasized the need to effectively manage and protect groundwater resources that are necessary to sustain economic growth and ensure quality of life.
Groundwater and surface water systems together provide water for public, industrial, agricultural and recreational use. Essential for the protection and sustainability of these irreplaceable resources is their knowledge and monitoring.
Lack of information about these resources may cause problems in their preservation and use in the future, and in the context of climate change, vulnerability of individual communities will increase.
The aim of the project is to evaluate existing hydrological groundwater resources, determine the extent of their degradation based on past and current land use practices, estimate the potential of these sources for further regional development of agriculture and tourism, and the ability to use these resources as alternatives to drinking water supply, especially in coastal areas that may be affected by climate change (salt water intrusion).
As part of the fieldwork was verified locations (GPS coordinates) of existing hydrogeological objects (wells, boreholes, surface water area). The verification include measuring groundwater levels, sampling and testing in situ (temperature, conductivity, pH, dissolved oxygen, salinity, redox, color, transparency, odor), assessment of potential sources of groundwater contamination (industry, landfills, etc.), sampling of groundwater and surface water for other laboratory testing and selection of suitable sites for new test wells.
G E T Ltd. participated in the evaluation and processing of data and the preparation of GIS data for creating models of groundwater flow and hydrogeological characteristics of the area.
